EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT :

One to Save By Tia Louise *unedited draft, subject to change Release Date: March 26, 2015 Page 1, Chapter 1: Secrets Melissa In the cool darkness of the semi-crowded bar, I study the glass in front of me and consider my journey. Memories of my old life fade like smoke in a glass. The shame that held me so tightly now dances at the edges of my mind like the whisper of a bad dream, a flicker of shadows that no longer make sense in my world. Young women in their shiny slip dresses twist and laugh on the dance floor, but instead of resentment, my lips melt into a smile. My old self—cynical, bitter, defeated—is a memory I have to work to recall. These days I could dance all night with them, but I’d rather spend my energy on other activities. The slim glass holds a pale amber liquid, and I can’t resist taking a sip. An involuntary wince pinches my eyes as I put it down. Seven and seven. Refreshing citrus dragged down by the heavy undertone of whiskey. So gross. Sliding my palms over my thighs, I realize my outfit isn’t much different from those girls on the dance floor. The deep red silk is fitted at my waist, and drapes loosely over my torso. My long dark hair is swept over one shoulder revealing a thin spaghetti strap. I lightly touch the delicate gold chain around my neck leading to the floating heart pendant that sits between my collarbones, and light glances off the thick gold cuff on my wrist. Unlike that first night, I’m alone here. My best friend Elaine is miles away with her new husband, most likely indulging in that blissful honeymoon period of early marriage. Make that, most certainly indulging. I know those two very well. I came by myself to the bar in Princeton after finishing my business with a client in town. My infant son is back in Wilmington, spending the weekend with his grandmother. Studying my hands, I admire the deep blue sapphire ring on my finger, but I have no wedding band. At thirty-two, I’m an unmarried mother of a beautiful little boy, and I wouldn’t change a thing… Yet. The tiny silver scar at my hairline reminds me of what a bad marriage is, and with my successful marketing business and the gorgeous cottage at the beach that I own, I’m satisfied with my life, calm. Not desperate. I’ll take my next steps deliberately, with confidence. All these thoughts preoccupy my mind when I blink up and catch him watching me from across the square-shaped bar. Blue eyes, strikingly blue because of the way they stand out beneath his dark brow, coupled with collar-length thick dark hair. He’s massive, at least six-two, and elegantly dressed with a thick stainless watch on his wrist. I can spot his type a mile away—rich, powerful, accustomed to getting whatever he wants… I know what he wants. A smile teases at the corner of my mouth. No coincidence I happened to look up at that exact moment to catch his gaze. He starts to move, but his eyes never leave mine. I don’t look away either. I also know what I want. Thick cords of muscle ripple beneath the thin black sweater he wears as he glides past the oblivious patrons talking and laughing. Some are more animated than others, waving their arms and putting their drinks in peril. A close beard shadows his face, and the muscles low in my pelvis tighten at the thought of how it will feel brushing the soft skin of my inner thighs...

Cover Reveal ~ Chipped Black Nail Polish by Nicholas Tanek

A tribute to a different kind of Jersey girl.

In New Jersey during the summer of 1989, an awkward thirteen-year-old who was obsessed with weird music fell head-over-heels in love with the coolest post-punk rock girl he had ever met.

Nicholas was insecure. He was a daydreamer, wishing for romance when he was told, over and over, that he could not have it. He was a toy, pulled and pushed, wanted and used, dragged along yet held at a distance. Nicholas fell in with the out crowd, and loved every minute of it. He fell in love and got left behind, but not before she changed him forever.

This is an irrational, emotional love story for the teenager inside all of us.

The music is loud, and you’re about to be pushed into the pit.

What some people are saying…

“I should have put you in therapy.” – my mother

“I insist that you use my real name.” – Kevin

“Finally, a title that doesn’t scare people off. Not like the first book, The Coolest Way to Kill Yourself.” – Kim Gray, publicist

Foreword by Wendy Buck

Three months after I read Nicholas’ first book, The Coolest Way to Kill Yourself, my thirteen-year-old daughter, M, told me she was a lesbian. I did not know Nicholas before reading his first book, but he has since become a close friend and confidant. I shared M’s news with him and his response was that I had to write a foreword for his next book. I asked him for the correlation between her announcement and his book, because I didn’t get it. And I fought him on it. What does being gay have in common with being punk rock? He told me to think about the term in a non-music sort of way. What does it represent? And so I did what I always do. I went away and I thought about what he said. Chipped Black Nail Polish takes place when I was a teenager, during the height of punk rock. As so many of us did, I promised myself I would never grow up to be one of those adults who forgot where she came from. Themusic was important, but more than that, what punk rock stood for took center stage for me: the do it- yourself philosophy, questioning the norm, thinking critically, and pushing the boundaries of acceptability. But above all of those things, the most basic characteristic of punk rock is to be true to one’s self. But, I broke that promise. I lost sight of myself and became ii someone I thought I should be in the eyes of my peers. And so, Nicholas and his book came along shortly after I started questioning my decisions and choices in life. Not only have I benefited from his being such a good friend, but so too has my daughter. I raise M to be a free thinker and she is very much a free spirit. When I look at her, I am so proud of the young woman she is becoming. She will make her mark. And just like how she came out to the world, she will do it in her own way and in her own time. Do not rush this child, and do not expect her to do it the normal way. She is a weirdo. Nicholas has captured only one summer, three months, in this book. These months were pinnacle in defining him as an adult. He, too, was thirteen during the events that took place. I am so grateful that Kim entered his life, for however brief that time was. She taught him to live in acceptance of one’s self, to question everything, to stretch himself outside his perceived comfort zone. She taught him punk rock. She taught him it was okay to be a weirdo.

Nicholas Tanek is an American ghostwriter from New Brunswick, New Jersey. He graduated from Rutgers University with a bachelor's degree in English. Nicholas Tanek grew up as a New Jersey punk rock skater kid who lost himself in the early 90’s New York City rave scene. After years of drug addiction, he got his life together when he was reunited with Lynn, the love of his life, before she died at the age of 37. Instead of choosing negativity, he chose creativity. Losing Lynn inspired him to write his first book, The Coolest Way To Kill Yourself. There is quite a bit of kinky sex, drugs, and music in the life of Nicholas Tanek and he has some unique stories to tell.

REVIEW - Shaken, Not Stirred by Sawyer Bennett

Welcome to Last Call...a bar where the drinks are cold and the nights are scorching hot.

Casey Markham is a man-eater in a rut. Swearing off relation- ships may keep her heart safe, but she’sbeginning to question if her casual flings will ever leave her satisfied. She’s wondering if it’s finally time to let go of the past and stop letting history control her future.

Bad boy biker, Tenn Jennings can’t get Casey off his mind. A chance encounter with the beautiful blond has left its mark, and now he’s determined to prove her wrong about everything she thought she knew about men.
It’s safe to say… Casey Markham has met her match.
SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED can be read as a stand-alone.

My Review

Tenn is on his way to North Carolina to follow his daughter who moved to there with ex-wife. Upon arriving at his ex-wife's place, he discovers that his ex-wife has taken Zoey, his daughter to Disney World for the week. So, Tenn decides to go with Kyle, a friend, to visit his sister at The Last Call bar, and that's where Tenn meets Casey for this first time.

Casey was hurt a long time ago, but has decided she will never allow herself to be hurt like that again. She tends to date the same type of men over and over again, but always lays the "rules" out. The moment a man starts to show any hint of taking things more serious, she drops them like a hot potato. Tenn is not the kind of man Casey normally dates. He's currently an unemployed motorcycle mechanic, an ex-marine and an ex-rancher. But there is something about him that attracts her.

I love the dynamics between Tenn and Casey. You almost wouldn't think they would work as well as they do. One of my favorites, is the pool game bet. Tenn seems to have a knack for into Casey's insecurities. But will that be enough for Casey to change and give love a chance?

This is the first book I've read out of the Last Call series. This can definitely be read as a stand-alone. While I realize that other couples in Shaken, Not Stirred have their own books, I didn't fell like I was missing anything by not having read the other books first. However, now that I've read Shaken, Not Stirred, I plan on going back and reading the rest of this series. Five star all the way!
